Backpacking Jordan on a Budget

Jordan, a trip that redefined what I thought I knew about adventure. It all started with a 14 Euro Ryanair flight from Milan to Amman, a bargain too good it nearly didn’t happen. A last-minute engine fault saw us switching planes, but before we knew it we were touching down in the beating heart of the Middle East, anticipation in the air.

Our itinerary consisted of two nights in Amman which included half a day visiting the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the Earth and then down to Petra on the coach. After one night and two days in Petra, we set off for Aqaba where we scuba dived and stayed with locals on Couchsurfing.
To wrap up our trip in Jordan, we spent the final night sleeping in a desert tent in Wadi Rum. The landscape there is immense, unique and utterly tranquil. You might notice it from the like of Dune 2, in which it made an appearance. We then returned to Amman thanks to a generous Spanish couple and their rental car, making the concluding day of this trip all the more bittersweet.

We were able to split the costs of taxis (ordered on the app) with other travellers in the country. With the ongoing situation in the neighbouring countries, we didn’t notice too many visitors around Jordan. As a result of this, we had the grand Petra national park almost all to ourselves.
The Jordanians we met were super welcoming, enthusiastic and down to earth. 10/10 Country to backpack.

The capital city Amman is the perfect way to start an adventure around Jordan, with most flights arriving into Queen Alia international airport. Delicious falafel wraps, magnificent mosques and incredible viewpoints come to mind when I remember Amman.
